The final meeting of MitEURO was held in Frankfurt am Main on the weekend 1-2 October 2005. This EU Concerted Action was generally believed to have been a great success and although there had been some problems associated with financing MitEURO, it was deemed to have been tremendously useful in bringing together like-minded scientists working on similar aspects of mitochondriology in diverse organisms. The final session of the meeting included a general discussion, focussed particularly on the future direction of MitEURO. On a show of hands, it was unanimously agreed that MitEURO should be continued in some form, although the exact format remains undefined. A group of individuals was identified to take responsibility for shaping its future. This MitEURO Continuity Council (MCC) comprises members that represent various taxonomic constituencies as follows:
This is not an all-encompassing Group and the ethos of the MCC is inclusivity rather than exclusivity. The MCC has two immediate roles. First is to ensure that a communication site is maintained to disseminate information and to retain contact information for all members. We are happy to announce that Howy Jacobs has managed to secure five years further funding to maintain our current MitEURO website (www.miteuro.org). We will automatically include and retain contact information from every MitEURO participant unless we hear otherwise. Second, we need to secure funding on an initial biennial basis to host a conference for around 200 participants. We have already started making informal approaches and will be making an application for an EMBO Marie Curie source. Another option, particularly at this early stage, is to apply to a relevant national body that might be prepared to help fund a meeting. If anyone has any suggestions/ideas, please don’t hesitate in contacting any one of us. Conference series in February that will be to host the first meeting in 2007. It must be noted that competition for this series is extremely strong and it is far from guaranteed that we will be successful. A second possibility is to apply for EU funding from the We are still formulating how the MCC will work and we would be grateful for any of your suggestion or comments. Further, if anyone is aware of any Group or individual who might be interested in joining MitEURO, please do contact any of us. Finally, we’d just like to remind everyone of how enthusiastic we all were about the maintenance of MitEURO. For this to work, it will require input not just from us but by everyone! If we can harness the enthusiasm shown in Frankfurt and over the past three or four years, there is no doubt we will all be meeting up again in 2007. Kindest regards Bob Lightowlers For and on behalf of the MCC
