Concerted Action on Mitochondrial Biogenesis and disease - MitEURO (Contract No. QLG1-CT-2001-00966 Proposal No. QLRT-2000-00966) 2002 - 2005 was a broad EU consortium of European laboratories carrying out research on mitochondrial biogenesis and disease.  The 51 research teams of MitEURO were scattered in 41 institutions in 14 different countries, and cover a wide range of disciplines, including clinical medicine, biochemistry, genetics, molecular cell biology, bioinformatics, plant sciences and physiology.

Quality of Life and Management of Living Resources Action Line 7 - Chronic and degenerative diseases (in particular cancer and diabetes), cardiovascular diseases (CDV) and rare diseases

Major challenges in biomedical research are the elucidation of the aetiology and pathogenesis of diseases for which there is more than one interacting cause (genetic, environmental, lifestyle) of high (e.g. cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes) or low (e.g. rare diseases) morbidity.  There is an urgent need to improve diagnosis, treatment, prevention and surveillance through epidemiology and applying advances in modern technology, requiring a multinational approach.

Our research is aimed at understanding the basis of ‘mitochondrial disease’.  These diseases include a wide range of human disorders that are caused by genetic defects of the mitochondria.  Mitochondria are cellular organelles with various tasks, including cellular energy production.  Therefore, mitochondrial disorders most commonly manifest in tissues highly dependent on biological energy: the brain, heart, muscle and the main sense organs, in particular the eye and inner ear.  Mitochondrial diseases include rather common conditions, such as hearing impairment, epilepsy, diabetes, muscle weakness or paralysis.
